Apache Gunship Design

I decided that I wanted to create some garden furniture for an environment I may create in the future. I went in search of picnic benches, garden tables, chairs and benches and eventually decided on making a garden bench.  I learned a lot from this project, namely adding chamfers and joining vertices together. Initially I decided to make it all one mesh, but once i reached the seating part I decided against it as it would be easier to create a different mesh for the seating wood. All i have left to do for this project now is to texture it. For screens and renders and more information click here

USB Pen Design

What is one thing that people take for granted these day? The humble USB Pen. I recently got a new USB pen, 32Gb(Amazed I managed to get one of those so cheap), and decided to model my wonderful new pen. It started out life as a box, then quickly transformed into a tight curved, USB pen. I have a few things left to do to it, namely, adding in a few final details to the usb connector, and texture the model. For screens, renders and more information click here

Particle Effects

In one of our tutorial classes we set about creating particle effects within 3DS Max. It was great fun. We learned how to create snow, using gravity and wind effects to manipulate the particles, and using the particle bomb effect. for more screens, videos, and information click here

3D Studio Max

I've been looking for a challenge. I found it in this project... The Apache Gunship has it all. Curves, painstaking detail, detachable parts. Easily the most difficult modelling exercise I've taken on thus far. But easily the most rewarding. Sure it's challenging, but I've learned a lot from it and I haven't even finished the model yet. I've learned new ways to model it, for instance, delete one side, and only model half the mesh, then apply a symmetry modifier. Sounds simple, but can be a technique that some would overlook. Really handy way of working. I learned how to create more fluid designs, use vertices to get that magical flowing line every modeller dreams of achieving. Once I have the model finished I'll update this blog post with a final render but for now for screens and more details on the Apache gunship design click here

3DS Max is a powerful 3D Modelling software package offered by Autodesk. It is one of the industry standard modelling packages and had a wide range of tools at its disposal. I began my 3D Modelling career in 2008 when I took an interest in how game assets were created. I began looking into the whole concept of 3D modelling and because increasingly interested. I began using Blender, and as of last year(2011) I upgraded to 3DS Max. I've spent the last year or so, learning the basics of what Max has to offer, and I feel like I have just barely scratched the surface.

On this page, I'll be posting blogs about various 3DS Max projects I am, have been, or will be working on over the next few months outside of Uni. At present, I'm working on three different projects. The apache Gunship, a Garden Bench and a USB Pen. All are coming along nicely, if not finished at this point, and I'm learning alot from them. All the details about each project can be found in subsequent posts below :)

So I decided to start making a scene in 3DS Max and I wanted to create something simple to start with, but something I could add to over the coming months when time came available. I decided to use the office scene to start with. So far I've modelled and textured a computer desk and over the next week or so I'll be modelling a computer, and after that a desk chair. Basically I just want to have a completed scene, textured and rendered, by the time I'm done. For more screenshots, and a detailed run down click here.
